Scalable physical coloration

چکیده
Methods to produce colored surfaces using physical mechanisms are proposed, with aluminum used as a demonstration vehicle. Our approach aims to achieve tunable, vibrant colors through the interaction of three well-established physical mechanisms of color formation, namely (1) resonant scattering and interference effects in a nano-structured surface (e.g. via anodization of aluminum), (2) plasmonic resonances in metal nanoparticles, and (3) spectrally selective absorption enhancement in ultrathin films, such as amorphous germanium and carbon. We provide proof-of-concept by fabricating and characterizing representative aluminum-based samples showing vivid colors throughout the visible

Evolution of sexual dichromatism: contribution of carotenoid- versus melananin-based coloration
In birds, carotenoid-based plumage coloration is more dependent on physical condition and foraging abilities and less constrained developmentally than is melanin-based coloration. Thus, female mate choice for honest signals should result in more intense sexual selection on carotenoidthan on melanin-based plumage coloration. Using variation in sexual dimorphism as an indirect measure of the inte...
متن کاملVisual evoked potentials to change in coloration of a moving bar
In our previous study we found that it takes less time to detect coloration change in a moving object compared to coloration change in a stationary one (Kreegipuu etal., 2006). Here, we replicated the experiment, but in addition to reaction times (RTs) we measured visual evoked potentials (VEPs), to see whether this effect of motion is revealed at the cortical level of information processing. W...
متن کاملCryptic and conspicuous coloration in the pelagic environment.
Despite the importance of cryptic and conspicuous coloration in pelagic ecosystems, few researchers have investigated the optimal reflectance spectra for either trait. In this study, the underwater radiance distribution in tropical oceanic water was modelled using measured inherent optical properties and radiative transfer calculations. The modelled light field was then used to predict the refl...
متن کاملThe colours of humanity: the evolution of pigmentation in the human lineage.
Humans are a colourful species of primate, with human skin, hair and eye coloration having been influenced by a great variety of evolutionary forces throughout prehistory. Functionally naked skin has been the physical interface between the physical environment and the human body for most of the history of the genus Homo, and hence skin coloration has been under intense natural selection. From a...
